Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program
The Jackson City School District has been awarded a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) grant to provide our elementary students with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the school day. Students attending Northview, Southview, and Westview elementary schools will receive free fresh fruits or vegetables during the school day, two or three days each week, as healthy snacks options. The goal of the FFVP is to introduce children to fresh fruits and vegetables, to include new and different varieties for the students to experience, and to increase overall acceptance and consumption of fresh, unprocessed produce among children. In the first weeks of the program Jackson elementary students are receiving morning or afternoon snacks of carrots, apple slices, cucumbers, and “Cuties” mandarin oranges. The FFVP also encourages healthier school environments by promoting nutrition education as part of the program. A project of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service, the Ohio Department of Education’s Office of Integrated Student Supports awarded the Jackson City Schools a grant of $88,765.00 for the program to be implemented during the 2020-2021 school year. The Jackson City Schools greatly appreciate receiving this FFVP grant and look forward to our students learning about and experiencing many different fresh fruits and vegetables throughout this school year.
